It might be the farthest reach of the China Railways network but that did not stop me.

Stunning scenery rewards the adventurous traveller in this mountainous and remote corner of far Western China, closer to Tehran than it is to Beijing.

Take a look below, as I braved the 14 hour, 1,360 mile overnight train odyssey from Kashgar, on the border with Pakistan, to the historic city Dunhuang, following one route of the ancient Silk Road.
