Whether you are travelling to Angoulême and its environs for a wedding at La Vue France or not, here is all the accommodation advice we gave to our guests:
Finding Your Accommodation
You will all be familiar with the accommodation search websites such as www.trivago.co.uk, www.booking.com and www.airbnb.co.uk, which will serve you well.
If you’re happy to hire a car, and most likely organise yourselves into a small group, there are some amazing historic homes dotted around that you can hire in their entirety for the weekend. Try HomeAway as a good starting point.
A few specific options to look out for…
Nearby options:
La Cure du Maine Charles: a grand old building, five minutes walk from La Vue France. A little antiquated but offering bed, breakfast and quite the experience. Choose the Gothic Room for full effect.
La Tonnellerie: one of our favourites, this small family run riverside hotel is just under 10 minutes drive away in the pretty town of Chateauneuf-sur-Charente. Sensibly priced and enjoys good reviews for both their rooms and their restaurant.
L’Esperluette: is situated in the village of Bouteville, deep in cognac and pineau country and home to a number of historic buildings. Large rooms and welcoming courtyard await at this rural retreat.
La Maison du Ruisseau: a beautiful old stone built Charentaise Farmhouse, a ten minute drive from the wedding venue. Has it’s own pool and situated in a quiet village setting. Lovingly run by an English couple, Ian and Val.
Le Relais de Saint Preuil: A former coaching inn dating from the XVII and XVIII centuries, it has been lovingly restored. A very classy option and another one of our favourites. So good, they even host weddings here as well.
Domaine des Collinauds: a rural gem, 15 minutes drive from the wedding venue. Take a room in the main house or book a whole gîte to yourselves. Either way, enjoy the pool, the tranquility and stunning vineyard location.
Chateau de la Mothe Charente: a lovely chateau, discretely hidden away near the Charente river in its own expansive grounds. 20 mins from the wedding venue, and close to historic Angoulême.
Hotel La Vieille Etable: a functional three star hotel that has been run by the same family for 40 years. It sits in the quiet country side, equi-distant between Birac and Angoulême. Their restaurant is well known locally in its own right.
La Pelletrie: small, rustic and rural La Pelletrie is situated a couple of kilometres outside Chateauneuf-sur-Charente. It offers 3 rooms: 2 doubles and 1 family room.
Hotel Premiere Classe Angoulême La Couronne: cheap, bright and cheery motel style accommodation, on the road to Angoulême.
Les Chassins: is another rustic B&B option in the small village of Claix, 15 mins drive to La Vue France. They can accommodate 14 in the B&B and two people in their gîte. Their swimming pool is open during the Summer months.
Les Gîtes Chassors: situated just to the north of Chateauneuf-sur-Charente, Les Gîtes Chassors sleeps nine (two studio gîtes, and a two bed apartment sleeping five). 15 minute drive from La Vue France.
Les Sources: located in a restored old farmhouse 3km north of Chateauneuf-sur-Charente. Les Sources can accommodate up to 30 people across five chambres d’hôtes and three gîtes. We are told they can also arrange transport to / from the wedding venue.
Angoulême – closest big town
Whilst Angoulême is a little further away than the above rural accommodation, there is a lot more transport, attractions and distractions close at hand here.
Ibis: there are no less than four Ibis hotels dotted around Angoulême, offering a range of economical accommodation.
Hôtel Mercure: a solid option within the pleasant ‘old town’ of Angoulême.
Hotel Saint Gelais: one of the swankier joints in town, if you are looking to treat yourself.
Cognac – next closest big town
A little further away from the wedding venue than Angoulême…
Hôtel François Premier: super central four star hotel.
Y’Euse: is another swanky option, if you are in the market for such treats.
